10 Tavern Rumors
- Head of the Church: No tears were shed when they killed that wicked old priest. His deeds were darker than most knew, with bodies unaccounted for, or worse, not spoken of. Years later, the vanishings began anew. The elders claimed to see the priest peering through windows in the dead of night. I scoffed at first. But then I saw it, his floating severed head, still sporting that circlet he found.
- My Gem!: We expected a chest full of riches, and instead there was just a ring and a gem. How do you split that among four? So, we agreed to sell them and split whatever coin we’d get. The captain insisted on holding onto them, but then he started acting strange. He gave up the ring easy enough, but he wouldn’t let no one see that gem. Kept saying he had to keep it safe. Then he just took off in the night! Fine by me, that ring fetched a good price!
- Eldritch Tomb: I’m told a great warrior was buried beneath these very hills, protected by all sorts of eldritch invocations. Some say he was a great benefactor to the land and that he slew many terrible beasts. Others claim that he was the beast himself, and the world’s a better place without him. But they all agree he was buried in golden armour, with an axe that could speak to the gods.
- Secret Seller: See that young woman? There’s a strange aura about her. She’s not after companionship, but secrets. She makes people confess their deepest secrets, and then they pay handsomely to keep them hidden. I’ve had the good sense to steer clear of her, and you’d best do the same.
- Bread Thief: I was resting at the crossroads when I met the vagabond, bundle over his shoulder, with greasy hair and ill-fitting clothing. He asked the way to the nearest bakery, and I told him there was one in the village three miles west. He thanked me and went on his way. Wasn’t ten minutes later the knights came galloping down the road, asking if I’d seen a young thief headed this way. Of course not, I said, just some old tramp looking for his daily bread. They rode west. And now that I think about it, he did seem mighty pale for a man of the road.
- Tavern Fire: That old tavern was filled with vagrants and cut throats, and I don’t miss it since it burnt down. But there’s a tale about that night. A group of travellers arrived, looking for some individuals who’d stolen a special chest. They booked rooms for the night, and I guess word got around because it wasn’t long past dark the fighting started. The whole place lit up like tinder, and those adventurers chased each other right out of town. The tavern was ashes by morning, and good thing too, I owed a hefty tab.
- Giant from the Depths: A huge, dismembered corpse washed up on our beach. Pieces of it as big as your horse, fins larger than rowboats. A fearsome sight indeed, but that’s not what puts the fright in a fisher like me. It’s the arm-length teeth marks. Whatever killed that leviathan, it’s tenfold the size and a hundredfold the terror.
- Temple in the Woods: Rumor has it that deep in the woods is a ruined temple to some long-forgotten god. An altar there supposedly holds an artifact of incredible power. But those that gaze upon it get a terrible sickness that eats them away from the inside out. And the creatures around that place? That artifact makes them big and it makes them mean.
- Pond Creature: The lake, once a small pond, keeps expanding each year and swallowing up the land. Who knows how deep it is. And the fish! Gods, most are unfit to eat and rest too large to pull in on a line. I remember my cousin bet I couldn’t swim across faster than her. The whole time I could feel her nipping at my legs. When I got to shore and looked back to gloat, she was gone.
- Guard’s Gone: A few days past, those hobgoblin scoundrels launched an attack against us. Their war machines were something to behold, but it beats me where they got them. Our captain, head full of valour, thought he could lead an assault and wipe them out. But wouldn’t you know it, their whole warband was waiting at the back gates and surged in like a flood. Killing, looting, and causing havoc. The captain lived, but if anyone catches up with him, I wager he’ll wish he hadn’t.
